About Microsoft Azure outages

Microsoft Azure is one of the largest cloud platforms, hosting a huge share of business apps and services. Its regional incidents can cascade into outages across many companies at once, and it shares an identity layer (Entra ID) with Microsoft 365, so sign-in problems sometimes span both.

Microsoft Azure publishes official incident updates at its status page — worth checking alongside our live test above.

What to do when Microsoft Azure is down

  1. Check the Azure status page filtered to your specific region and service, since Azure incidents are usually scoped to particular regions rather than global.
  2. Sign in to the Azure Portal's Service Health blade if you can, which shows incidents affecting your actual subscriptions that never appear on the public status page.
  3. Test whether the Azure Portal itself or your deployed resources are failing, since portal outages sometimes occur while the underlying workloads keep running untouched.
  4. For sign-in failures across Microsoft services, check Entra ID's status specifically, since identity incidents cascade into both Azure and Microsoft 365 simultaneously.

Microsoft Azure alternatives to use in the meantime

For end users, apps hosted on Azure come back only when the incident resolves, since AWS and Google Cloud are not drop-in substitutes at the application level. Teams running their own Azure workloads can fail over to a paired region if geo-redundancy was configured in advance — this is not something to set up mid-incident. Locally cached data and offline modes in affected apps are the practical stopgap until Azure's status page confirms recovery.

Microsoft Azure FAQ

Why did many apps go down when Azure had an outage?

Countless companies run their apps, APIs, and sign-in on Azure, often concentrated in a few regions. A core Azure service incident there ripples into unrelated products within minutes — the Azure status page shows which services and regions are affected.

Is it Azure or Microsoft 365 that is down?

Azure (the cloud platform) and Microsoft 365 (Teams, Outlook, and so on) are distinct but share the Entra ID sign-in system, so an identity incident can hit both. Check Azure status and the Microsoft 365 service health page separately to pinpoint which one is degraded.

Is Microsoft Azure down for everyone or just me?

We test Microsoft Azure (https://azure.microsoft.com) live from our own servers. If our check succeeds but you still can't connect, the outage is probably local to you — try another network or device, clear your cache, or check Microsoft Azure's official status channels.
