eBay is a global marketplace for auctions and fixed-price sales. Because listings are time-sensitive, even short eBay outages have real consequences — bids can fail in an auction’s final minutes.
What to do when eBay is down
- Try the eBay app if the browser site is failing, since mobile and web traffic can route through different infrastructure during a partial outage.
- If search returns no results but a saved item link still opens directly, eBay's search index is likely the specific piece that is down.
- Check 'My eBay > Purchase History' before repeating a bid or Buy It Now, since an action that appeared to fail sometimes still registered on eBay's servers.
- Set up outbid notifications ahead of time on items you are watching, since that limits the damage from an outage hitting during an auction's closing minutes.
eBay alternatives to use in the meantime
If eBay is unreachable during a live auction, there is no way to place that specific bid elsewhere, since the listing and its bid history are eBay-specific. For general secondhand or collectible shopping in the meantime, marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, or Poshmark for apparel cover overlapping categories with a different seller base. What happens to my auction if eBay goes down?
eBay does not automatically extend auctions for outages except in major, acknowledged incidents. Bids that fail during brief downtime are simply lost, which is why sniping in the last seconds carries platform risk as well as strategy risk.
Why can’t I list an item on eBay right now?
The selling flow relies on eBay’s listing and image-upload services, which fail independently of browsing. Draft your listing and retry later — if buyers can see the site but sellers cannot list, it is an eBay-side partial outage, not your account.
