What to do when PayPal is down
- Open the PayPal app instead of the browser, or the reverse, since the two connect through different endpoints and one can work while the other errors.
- Check the Activity tab for a pending or processing status before retrying a payment, since a transaction that looks stuck may already be queued to complete.
- Log out and back in, or try a private browsing window, to rule out a stale session before assuming a platform-wide incident.
- Merchants relying on PayPal's checkout API should check its status separately from the consumer site, since API incidents do not always coincide with paypal.com being reachable.
PayPal alternatives to use in the meantime
If PayPal is down, most merchants also accept a debit or credit card entered directly at checkout, bypassing PayPal entirely. Checkout flows built on Stripe or Square, where offered, run on separate payment infrastructure and are unaffected by a PayPal-specific incident. For sending money to a person rather than a business, a bank's own transfer app may still work. Avoid retrying a payment that already shows as pending — check your activity history before trying again.

Merchant sites embed PayPal’s checkout APIs, so a PayPal incident breaks payment buttons across the web while paypal.com may still load fine. PayPal’s status page tracks those API components separately from the consumer site.
My PayPal payment failed — was I charged?
Failed payments during outages usually never complete, but authorization holds can briefly appear on your bank statement before dropping off automatically. Check your PayPal activity page once service recovers before paying again to avoid duplicates.
