What to do when Claude is down
- Start a new conversation rather than retrying in a long one; lengthy chats hit context limits that can look like errors while new chats work normally.
- Switch between claude.ai in a browser and the mobile or desktop app, since the clients do not always fail together during a partial incident.
- Check status.anthropic.com's separate components for claude.ai and the API, since one commonly degrades while the other keeps serving normally.
- If responses fail only on one account, check whether you have hit your plan's usage limit, since limit messages during peak hours are often mistaken for outages.
Claude alternatives to use in the meantime
If Claude is down, ChatGPT and Google Gemini handle comparable writing, analysis, and coding tasks through their own apps, running on entirely separate infrastructure from Anthropic's.
