Microsoft’s cloud estate spans Microsoft 365, Teams, Outlook, and Azure. Because one identity system (Entra ID) signs into all of them, authentication incidents can lock users out of email, chat, and files simultaneously.

What to do when Microsoft is down
- Microsoft 365 admins should check the admin center's Service Health page, which shows incident advisories and reference IDs not visible on the public status site.
- Try the Outlook or Teams mobile app if the desktop client is stuck, since mobile apps sometimes use a different sync path that recovers first.
- Sign in through a different Microsoft property, such as office.com instead of outlook.com, to check whether Entra ID itself is affected or just one app's front end.
- For SharePoint or OneDrive files that will not open online, check whether desktop sync through the OneDrive client still works, which narrows the fault to the web app specifically.
Microsoft alternatives to use in the meantime
If Microsoft 365 is down, Google Workspace covers similar email and document needs for teams that already have accounts there, and locally saved Office files can still be opened and edited offline in the desktop apps. For urgent team chat, Slack or Discord run independently of Microsoft's Entra ID and Teams infrastructure, making either a reasonable temporary stand-in until sign-in recovers.

Why are Teams and Outlook down at the same time?
Microsoft 365 services share the Entra ID sign-in system, so an authentication incident blocks Teams, Outlook, and SharePoint together even though the apps themselves are healthy. Microsoft posts these incidents with reference codes on its status channels.
Is microsoft.com being up proof that Microsoft 365 is fine?
No — the marketing website and the Microsoft 365 service infrastructure are entirely separate. microsoft.com can load perfectly during a major 365 outage, which is why checking the dedicated service health page matters more than loading the homepage.
Is Microsoft down for everyone or just me?
