About Gmail outages
Gmail is Google’s email service with billions of accounts. Its outages tend to be partial and specific — attachments failing to send, messages delayed for hours, or the web app stuck loading — and are logged on Google’s Workspace dashboard.
Gmail publishes official incident updates at its status page — worth checking alongside our live test above.
What to do when Gmail is down
- Switch to Gmail's basic HTML view at mail.google.com/mail/u/0/h if the standard interface will not load, since it uses a lighter code path that can stay up during a partial incident.
- Check a third-party mail client set up with Gmail's IMAP settings; if it fetches mail while the web app cannot, the fault is isolated to Gmail's web front end.
- For attachments specifically failing to send, note that Gmail stores attachments separately from message delivery, so plain text emails may still go through fine.
- Search the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for 'Gmail' specifically instead of the broader Workspace summary, since Gmail incidents are logged as their own entries.
Gmail alternatives to use in the meantime
During a Gmail outage, mail already synced to a phone's native mail app or a desktop client such as Outlook or Apple Mail may still be readable even if new messages cannot be fetched. For anything urgent, a secondary email address, such as an Outlook.com or work account, can serve as a temporary channel, with a follow-up from Gmail once it is confirmed stable to avoid sending duplicate messages.
Gmail FAQ
Why is Gmail not sending my emails?
Stuck outbox messages during a Gmail incident queue server-side and send automatically after recovery — resending manually creates duplicates. Google’s Workspace status dashboard lists Gmail incidents with affected functions like sending or attachment handling.
Gmail says "Something went wrong" — is it down for everyone?
That generic error can be a Gmail incident or a browser-side problem with cookies and extensions. The quickest discriminator: try the Gmail mobile app — if it syncs while the web app errors, your browser session is the issue, not Gmail.
Is Gmail down for everyone or just me?
We test Gmail (https://mail.google.com) live from our own servers. If our check succeeds but you still can't connect, the outage is probably local to you — try another network or device, clear your cache, or check Gmail's official status channels.
