About Threads outages
Threads is Meta’s text-based conversation app built on Instagram’s account system, which means an Instagram identity outage can prevent Threads logins even when Threads itself is healthy.
Threads publishes official incident updates at its status page — worth checking alongside our live test above.
What to do when Threads is down
- Check whether Instagram itself is reachable first, since Threads authenticates entirely through your Instagram identity and an Instagram outage blocks Threads logins too.
- Try threads.net in a browser instead of the app, since the web client was added later and sometimes lags behind app-only incidents.
- Force-close and reopen the app rather than just refreshing, since Threads caches feed data locally and a stale cache can look like a frozen server.
- Check metastatus.com, which reports Threads as a component separate from Instagram even though the two share login infrastructure.
Threads alternatives to use in the meantime
Bluesky and X both cover the same short-form public posting format if Threads is unreachable, though your Threads-specific follower list won't transfer to either. Mastodon is a decentralized option for the same style of posting. None of these mirror Threads' tight integration with an existing Instagram following, so expect to rebuild your audience separately on whichever you pick.
Threads FAQ
Why can’t I log in to Threads?
Threads authenticates through your Instagram account, so login failures often trace back to Instagram’s identity service rather than Threads itself. If Instagram is having problems, expect Threads sign-in to be affected at the same time.
Is Threads down when the feed won’t refresh?
A non-refreshing Threads feed can be a Meta backend incident or simply a stale app session. Force-close and reopen the app first; if the feed is still frozen and our check shows problems reaching threads.net, it is likely on Meta’s side.
Is Threads down for everyone or just me?
We test Threads (https://threads.net) live from our own servers. If our check succeeds but you still can't connect, the outage is probably local to you — try another network or device, clear your cache, or check Threads's official status channels.
