Minecraft’s online side spans Microsoft account login, Realms hosting, and multiplayer session services — single-player keeps working in any outage, but Realms and server logins depend on Mojang and Xbox services.
What to do when Minecraft is down
- Try switching between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition if you own both, since the two run on partly separate multiplayer services and one can work while the other does not.
- For a 'Cannot connect to server' message on a specific multiplayer server, ping that server's own address separately, since the fault is often the host, not Mojang's services.
- Fully close and reopen the launcher, not just the game window, to force it to refresh its authentication token before assuming an ongoing outage.
- If only Realms will not load, check for a pending update prompt, since Realms sometimes forces a client update before reconnecting, which can look like downtime.
Minecraft alternatives to use in the meantime
While Minecraft's online services are down, singleplayer worlds and LAN play with others on the same network keep working since neither needs Mojang's servers. Community-run Java servers hosted independently of Realms may still be reachable if the outage is limited to Mojang's own infrastructure rather than the wider internet. For a break entirely, building or exploring an existing offline world remains available regardless of what is happening online.

Why can’t I log in to Minecraft with my Microsoft account?
Minecraft authentication now goes through Microsoft/Xbox account services, so an Xbox identity incident blocks Minecraft logins too. Launcher error messages about authentication servers almost always mean a service-side problem, not a corrupted install.
Is Minecraft Realms down or just my realm?
Realms are hosted per-subscription on Mojang’s infrastructure, and a platform incident takes down everyone’s realms at once. If friends on other realms are fine but yours will not open, resetting or restarting your own realm is the more likely fix.
