What to do when Xbox Live is down
- Open the Xbox Network tile in the console's Guide menu to run a live connection test rather than trusting the console's home screen alone.
- Try signing in through the Xbox mobile app or a browser at xbox.com — if those work but the console does not, the fault is local to that device.
- Power-cycle the console fully by holding the Xbox button for ten seconds until it shuts off, then unplug it for a minute before restarting.
- If matchmaking or downloads fail while sign-in works, check whether your NAT type shows 'Strict' in network settings, since that blocks peer connections independent of any outage.
Xbox Live alternatives to use in the meantime
While Xbox Live is down, single-player games already installed keep working if your console is set as your home Xbox, since that removes the online license check. For multiplayer, PC platforms like Steam or Epic Games Store remain independent alternatives if you own the same titles there. Voice chat with friends can shift temporarily to Discord, which runs on separate infrastructure from Xbox Live's own party system.
